GUIDES FROM THE MASTER
Shashlik for 10 People: How Much Meat, Which Pack and a Plan for One Grill
For 10 people you need 4 kg of shashlik if it is the main course. That is 400 g of marinated meat per guest, master butcher Konstantin Morgel’s rule of thumb. It is exactly what the “Friends and Family” pack contains: 4 kg in four varieties for €67.98, or €6.80 per person.
Ten guests is the classic family gathering: a birthday in the garden, a christening, a Sunday with parents, siblings and children. One grill is enough, and you can manage it on your own. What you need is a plan. How much will the children eat? What if someone doesn’t eat pork? When do you light the charcoal so nobody is left waiting with an empty plate?
Your shopping list with the amount, the pack and the sides is right below this introduction. Further down is what it doesn’t cover: options with prices, how to run the grill and a timeline through to the leftovers.

At a glance
- 4 kg of shashlik feeds 10 people as a main course; with a buffet 3 kg is enough, for big appetites plan 5 kg.
- €67.98 buys the “Friends and Family” pack with 4 kg in four varieties, which is €6.80 per person with free delivery.
- One grill is enough: it handles about 2 to 3 kg per round, so two rounds of 15 to 20 minutes cook everything.
- About 4 kg of charcoal plus a spare bag, lit 20 to 30 minutes before the first skewers are due on the grill.
- 150 to 200 g is what children up to about 12 eat, and each bratwurst replaces roughly 100 g of shashlik.

How much meat for a BBQ for 10 people?
400 g per person is your starting point. But a family party rarely means ten equally hungry adults. Children eat less, teenagers often more, and if your aunt brings her potato salad, everyone eats a little less meat.
The table shows typical groups of 10. For 7, 12 or 14 guests, use the calculator in our guide to shashlik per person.
| Your group | Calculation | Total shashlik |
|---|---|---|
| 10 adults, buffet or lots of sides | 10 × 300 g | 3 kg |
| 10 adults, shashlik as the main course | 10 × 400 g | 4 kg |
| 10 adults, big appetites, long evening | 10 × 500 g | 5 kg |
| 8 adults, 2 children up to 12 | 8 × 400 g + 2 × 150–200 g | 3.5–3.6 kg |
| 6 adults, 4 children up to 12 | 6 × 400 g + 4 × 150–200 g | 3–3.2 kg |
| 10 adults, each also eats a bratwurst | 10 × (400 g − 100 g) | 3 kg |
BBQ pack for 10 people: which option suits you?
“Friends and Family” is made for exactly this size: 1 kg each of Classic pork, Onion & Garlic pork, Classic chicken breast and Mayo chicken thigh. Half pork, half chicken covers almost every taste in a mixed family. At €67.98 you are above the €49 minimum order, so delivery is free.
If you want lamb on the table, build the 4 kg from smaller packs: “Work’s done. Grill’s on.”, “Try Them All” with 500 g of lamb with onion, plus 500 g of pork. For big appetites, add 1 kg of pork shashlik to the pack.
Before you buy, you can swap within the same price group: pork for pork, chicken for chicken, so Onion & Garlic pork can become Mayo pork. The 2 kg of pork stay in the pack.
| Option | What you order | Amount | Price | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic mix | 1 × “Friends and Family” | 4 kg | €67.98 | €6.80 |
| With lamb to try | “Work’s done. Grill’s on.” + “Try Them All” + 500 g pork | 4 kg | €71.99 | €7.20 |
| Big appetites | “Friends and Family” + 1 kg pork shashlik | 5 kg | €82.97 | €8.30 |
BBQ for 10 people: is one grill enough?
Yes. As a rule of thumb, a large charcoal grill or mangal handles about 2 to 3 kg of shashlik per round, and a round takes 15 to 20 minutes. For 4 kg that means two rounds and about 40 minutes. With 10 guests, a second grill is more work than it is worth.
Our guide to grilling shashlik covers grilling times, embers and core temperature in detail. For your party, split the four “Friends and Family” varieties like this, one per skewer:
- Round 1: Classic pork and Classic chicken breast. The pork (15 to 20 minutes) goes on first, the chicken breast (10 to 15) about 5 minutes later, so both are ready together.
- Round 2: Onion & Garlic pork and Mayo chicken thigh. Both need 15 to 20 minutes and go on at the same time.
- Check the embers before round 2: if you can hold your hand at skewer height for 4 to 5 seconds, the heat is right.
- Charcoal: about 1 kg per kg of meat, so roughly 4 kg, plus a spare bag.
- Two pairs of tongs and two plates, one for raw skewers and one for cooked. Pork and chicken need at least 70 °C in the centre for at least 2 minutes.
Timeline: shashlik for 10 people from ordering to leftovers
Most mishaps happen on the day itself: the charcoal is lit too late, and the skewers aren’t threaded when the first guests ring the bell.
If your party falls after the best-before date on the pack, freeze the meat flat and in portions as soon as it arrives. Our guide to freezing shashlik explains how.
| When | What |
|---|---|
| As soon as the date is set | Count your guests, children separately. Work out the amount with the table above and choose your option. |
| In good time, with a few days’ buffer | Order. Before bank holidays and long weekends, a little earlier still. |
| When the parcel arrives | Straight into the fridge. Check the best-before date and freeze flat if needed. |
| The day before | Thaw anything frozen overnight in the fridge. Make potato salad or coleslaw and the sauces. Put out charcoal and skewers. |
| On the day, before guests arrive | Thread the skewers, one variety each, and put them back in the fridge sorted by round. |
| About 45 minutes before eating | Light the charcoal; it turns white after 20 to 30 minutes. Pickle the onions and only now dress the tomato and cucumber salad. |
| At mealtime | Grill round 1, rest for 3 to 5 minutes, serve. Then put round 2 on. |
| After the meal | Cooked leftovers into the fridge promptly, then piping hot in flatbread the next day. Raw shashlik that stayed cold throughout and was never frozen can go in the freezer. |
Sides for 10 people: who brings what?
The shopping list above tells you how much lavash, onion, salad, herbs and sauce you need. At a family party, the real question is who makes what. If everyone just brings something, you end up with three potato salads and no bread.
Recipes for pickled onions, sauces and salads are in our guide to sides for shashlik. It works best if you hand out the jobs with the invitation:
- You: the meat, lavash, pickled onions and herbs, because they have to be ready at the right minute.
- One guest: a salad that can be made the day before, such as potato salad with vinegar and oil, or coleslaw.
- A second guest: tomato and cucumber salad, dressed just before eating.
- A third: sauces, for example tomato sauce and a garlic sauce made with soured cream. And whoever loves baking brings the cake for afterwards.
Family party or birthday at home: what keeps 10 guests happy?
With 10 guests, everyone usually sits at one table and the grill stands next to it. One host can do everything without missing the party. Here is how:
- Put the grill within sight of the table, but where the smoke doesn’t drift across it.
- Ask with the invitation who doesn’t eat pork, and order chicken, lamb or beef as single varieties for those guests.
- Keep the skewers in the fridge until their round and only take out what fits on the grill.
- If more guests turn up than planned, a second grill pays off from about 15. See shashlik for 20 people and shashlik for 30 people for how that works.

Frequently asked questions
How much meat do I need for a BBQ for 10 people?
Plan 4 kg of shashlik as a main course, which is 400 g per person. With a buffet and lots of sides, 3 kg is enough; for big appetites, plan 5 kg. Count children up to about 12 at 150 to 200 g.
How much does a BBQ pack for 10 people cost?
The “Friends and Family” pack with 4 kg of ready-marinated shashlik costs €67.98, which is €6.80 per person. Delivery is free because the order is above the €49 minimum. With lamb to try, 4 kg comes to €71.99.
Is one grill enough for 10 people?
Yes. A large charcoal grill or mangal handles about 2 to 3 kg per round. You cook the 4 kg for 10 people in two rounds of 15 to 20 minutes each.
How much charcoal do I need for 10 people?
Rule of thumb: about 1 kg of charcoal per kg of meat, so roughly 4 kg for 4 kg of shashlik. Add a spare bag in case the evening runs long or the embers fade between rounds.
What if some guests don’t eat pork?
Swaps in the pack stay within the same price group, so “Friends and Family” always keeps its 2 kg of pork. For guests who don’t eat pork, order chicken, lamb or beef as single varieties and cook them with separate tongs on their own part of the grill.
Can I order the shashlik well before the party?
Yes. The best-before date is on the pack. If your party falls after it, freeze the meat flat and in portions straight away and thaw it overnight in the fridge. Never refreeze thawed meat.
